Obesity has become a worldwide problem that has lead to an overall decrease in health for those afflicted. Lifestyle changes are the key to arresting and reversing the disease. For many obese individuals, maintenance of the lifestyle changes necessary to combat the disease is incredibly difficult, if not impossible. Failure of commercially available or medically supervised diet and exercise programs leads to a cycle of weight loss and weight gain that leaves many afflicted individuals heavier than when they started.
In the 1970s surgeons began performing operations on obese patients that were intended to bypass portions (gastric bypass) of the intestinal tract that absorb the food. Surgeons also developed operations to reduce the capacity of the stomach (gastric restriction) so that hunger was decreased. These operations together with lifestyle programs have documented success in achieving clinically meaningful weight loss for the life of most patients. As beneficial as these operations are for obese individuals, less than 1% of surgical candidates opt for these procedures.
BaroSense is engaged in investigational studies of a completely Trans-oral (through the mouth) procedure intended to reduce hunger both during and between meals. The investigational TERIS™ (Trans-oral Endoscopic Restrictive Implant System) procedure places a soft (tissue like) silicone device in the stomach that induces a feeling of fullness with a small meal. This system is intended to be a long-term aid to a lifestyle change program. It is designed to be fully removable without the need for incisional surgery. |
